What impressed me most about today’s Pro-Test rally in support of the Oxford University research facility was how good-natured it was. There was no doubt that people were passionate about the cause. But there was simply no need for any aggression. No need to shout or hurl abuse. And no deriding people with different points of view. The message was simple and clear - a huge number of people support good science and life-saving medical research. They want to see the research centre built, without fear of intimidation and violence. Good luck to you Pro-Test!

It seems that GeorginaTheGiraffe wasn’t the only one impressed with the behaviour of the Pro-Test crowd:
despite the evident anger abroad, this was the most civilised demo you could imagine, marshalled by stewards who seemed to have learnt their crowd control from watching Sgt Wilson on Dad’s Army: “Would you mind awfully just keeping to the left, if it’s not too much trouble. Thanks so much.” … Far from rabble-rousing, speaker after speaker politely, articulately made the point that without animal testing, humanity would suffer.
… One side of the road was filled with intelligence, rationality, education and common sense. On the other side was a bunch of crazy-eyed harridans who looked as though they had just returned from an audition for Macbeth. “Murderer!” frothed one at my son when he refused her leaflet. He is 17.
